Tennesseeiversary

TennesseeiversaryNow that June has rolled around, my family is planning to celebrate our Tennesseeiversary. After searching for a place to lay down roots, we feel incredibly blessed to have landed here in Knoxville. We’ve officially made it two full years thriving in Tennessee! As far as what we might do to celebrate, we have tossed around a few ideas and can’t wait to have a fun-filled day remembering our excitement when we first arrived.

One thing that comes to mind is a visit to Moonshine Mountain Cookie Company. When we first moved in, our sweet neighbor Karen brought us a box of these cookies to welcome us to the neighborhood. We thought they were absolutely delicious and loved that they were a Knoxville original company established in 1988. We don’t have any other particular reason to grab cookies, other than the nostalgic feeling we get remembering our neighbor’s heartfelt welcome when we were adjusting to our new place. We would love to plan a trip to Dollywood again but since ticket prices are not quite in the budget for our large family this year, we may put that off until closer to Christmas. We visited Dollywood for the first time around Christmas the first year we were here and it was a great family environment filled with sweet little Smoky Mountain memories. We also visited Anakeesta and hold it as a core memory in our hearts. We were blown away by the mountain skyline and fell in love with our new home’s beauty. A season pass to Anakeesta is a little less steep on price and is on our radar for a couple of repeat visits for sure. We are truly blessed to live in a place with so much natural beauty, most of which remains unexplored by our family.

What are some of y’all’s favorite little East Tennessee spots that you frequent? Bonus points if they are Knoxville native businesses!

The heat this summer is tough to beat, but we do enjoy going for walks on a few of the story book trails around East Tennessee. If you nature walk this is a great option for you at no additional cost. We usually pack a picnic lunch, water bottles, and bug spray, and adventure on the trails. One of our favorites is the storybook trail near the Powell library since it’s so close to our house. We love being able to reserve books through their online portal and then swing by to pick them up on our way out from the trail. Their library book reservation is a great option for busy moms with lots of littles because it cuts down on the chaos that can happen in the library and allows for you to investigate and read up on the book titles before checking them out.

We are also joyfully expecting our first full fledged Tennessee baby! We’ve been so blessed to welcome another precious soul to our crew and can’t wait to soak in all the newborn snuggles this summer. God is so good and we are so thankful He brought our family home to Tennessee.

Hey Y’all! I’m originally from Texas but I got to Tennessee as quick as I could! I love most things southern including the great food and I’m enjoying the similarities that Texas and Tennessee share. I’ve been told Texas and Tennessee are like cousins and I’m loving how wonderful it’s been living here in the Volunteer State. I earned my bachelor’s and master’s degree in education from Texas State University and then went for my doctorate in education at the University of Mary-Hardin Baylor. I taught elementary aged kids at a public school in Lockhart, Texas before staying home full-time with my own kids. I am a teacher at heart, and I love learning. I’m married to my high school sweetheart, so we’ve literally gown up together. Life’s mountains and valleys have been so fulfilling next to the love of my life. We have five kids and one on the way. My husband and I absolutely love our big family and all the entertaining/eventful days we have together. We lean on our faith and ask God for wisdom in raising up all these beautiful souls He’s entrusted us with. Our children enjoy singing, dancing, gymnastics, basketball, and learning to play new instruments. We are a homeschool family and enjoy the flexibility that we get throughout the year. I cannot wait to enjoy all the new activities and traditions our family will create in the coming seasons here in East Tennessee. As past residents of Texas, seasons are a new thing we are looking forward to experiencing for the first time. I’m so grateful God has called my family to lay down roots here and explore all the state’s natural beauty. I don’t have much free time but when I get the chance I love reading, writing, and exploring new family activities and attractions. I have lots of dreams and aspirations for myself and one that I plan to start this year are my children’s books. As a teacher I am extremely passionate about learning, and I’ve always had a soft spot for children’s literature as it is the gateway to becoming a lifelong learner. I have written several children’s books but haven’t taken the next step in publishing them yet. As a mom of five (soon to be six) it’s a lofty goal but one I’m sure I can meet with determination. In the coming year there are so many new things to experience and new friends to meet! I’m thankful I have my family to keep me grounded and remind me to take life day-by-day. I’ll always love my biggest and most important calling as a wife and mother and I cherish the life God has given me. Through His grace I am able to wake up every day and strive to meet the needs of my family and others I meet along life’s journey.
