Colorful, Creative, And Calm: Your Beginner’s Guide To NeedlepointIs your social media feed filled with colorful canvases and perfectly stitched pillows? If so, we share the same algorithm. Needlepoint is having a major moment. Often associated with your grandmother’s pillows, it’s currently being reimagined with bold colors, simple images, and playful messages. If you’re looking for a creative outlet or a screen-free way to unwind in 2026, needlepoint might be your new favorite thing.

This guide is your one-stop shop for what needlepoint is and how to get started.

What is needlepoint, anyway?

Needlepoint is a form of embroidery where you stitch yarn or thread through a painted canvas. Unlike cross-stitch, which follows a cross counted pattern, needlepoint canvases are pre-painted, so it’s essentially “coloring with thread.” Finished pieces can be turned into pillows, Christmas stockings, keychains, wall art, belts, and bags to name a few.

How to get started (without feeling overwhelmed)

Needlepoint supplies you actually need:

  • Painted canvas: These can be found at local craft stores, Etsy, and online websites.
  • Needlepoint needle: Typically size 20-25, but this depends on your canvas.
  • Thread or yarn: Wool, silk, or cotton are threads designed for needlepoint.
  • Scissors: Small, sharp ones work best.
  • Frame or stretcher bars (optional): These keep your canvas taut.

Many local shops will help you select threads and supplies so you don’t overbuy.

Step 2: Learn the stitch

Step 3: Stitch a little at a Time

Begin…if you get frustrated don’t spend hours trying to figure it out. Put it down and try again tomorrow.

Step 4: You’re done. What happens next?

Finishing can take time, so be patient. This is a piece of art you can treasure forever. Once you’ve finished your stitched canvas, you can send it to a professional finisher to turn it into a pillow, ornament, accessory, or framed art. Finishing can

Kailey Ryan
Hi, my name is Kailey. I am a Registered Nurse turned high school Health Science Teacher. I am a proud wife and mom of 1. My sweet Brady (any football fans?) was born in August 2018. I am a Knoxville native and absolutely love the area. Where else can you drive to a beach, major city, or mountains in less than 6 hours? I married my husband in May 2017, we have known each other since he was 16. I love all things true crime, Disney, crafts, and Mexican food . If we aren't at work you will find us traveling or planning our next trip. We have a passion for traveling and our goal is to visit all 50 states. I do also work as a travel agent. I absolutely love planning vacations for families. I have been a travel agent since 2016. At the end of the day all we have left are memories, I make sure each and every family creates lasting memories. I'm most certainly not an expert on being a mom, but I hope to add some experiences and outlooks being a "millennial mom".
