January Check-In: How Are We Really Doing?

January Check-In: How Are We Really Doing?January always feels like the longest month of the entire year. It’s my least favorite month. The holidays are over, the decorations are packed away (maybe), and we’re usually expected to start the new year with lots of energy and ambitious goals. Meanwhile, school and practices are back in full swing, and everyone in the house is still trying to remember what our normal routine even feels like. I’m already tired and the month isn’t even over yet.

So before January gets away from us, I wanted to stop and ask: How are we really doing?

If I’m being honest, I meant to come into January with resolutions, which included eating better, meal planning, and exercising. But then I had a minor foot surgery this month, which obviously put a damper on the whole exercising thing. So now those intentions have shifted into “maybe next month,” and in the scheme of things, I guess that’s okay.

And meal planning? Well, that plan didn’t last long at all. In theory, I want to do better. In reality, it takes a lot of time and effort, and it’s so much easier to throw something together for dinner that isn’t exactly healthy but gets the job done. Do I want to be more organized with meal planning? Absolutely. Am I currently prioritizing convenience? Also yes.

January doesn’t have to be about reinventing ourselves. Sometimes it’s just about finding our footing again after the holidays. (See what I did there?) I’m literally trying to find my footing again from surgery, but also trying to get it together to live a little healthier. Sometimes, the real goal is giving ourselves grace, easing back into routines, and remembering that everything doesn’t magically reset on January 1st, unless you have some serious motivation, which I’m definitely lacking at the moment.

Also, let’s be real: as a teacher and a mom of school-aged kids, I’m still holding onto the tiniest flicker of hope that we might get some snow days soon. Or at least one. A little winter miracle. That’s not too much to ask, right?

So here’s my check-in with all of you moms:

  • How are you doing…really?
  • Are your resolutions thriving? Barely hanging on? Already forgotten?
  • Are you tired? Proud? Overwhelmed? Drinking too much coffee?
  • Secretly wishing for a snow day too?

Wherever you are this month, just know: you’re not alone. We’re easing into this new year together (and maybe hoping for some snow).

Meredith Mousa
¡Hola! I’m Meredith. I have lived in Knoxville most of my life and I am proud to call it home – Go VOLS! I’m a mom to Hunter (born 2009) and Sophia (born 2012). They keep my husband and I super busy but certainly make our lives interesting and adventurous. I used to be the type of person who had to plan everything out, but once I became a mom, I had to let go of that and learn to go with the flow, which is actually much more fun and exciting. In addition to being a mom, I’m a high school Spanish teacher. Some of my favorite things to do are watch sports, shop at Target, and travel.
