Fun with Flag Football

Football is BIG in Tennessee and a tradition for most families. We can remember learning Rocky Top at a young age, and maybe even getting our first UT Vols shirt to cheer on the big orange. There are several ways to get involved in football, and flag football is just one option to enjoy many aspects of football.

Fun with Flag Football 2023Back in high school I remember playing flag football during our homecoming week and how fun it was to play on the high school field. After graduating, I was able to continue to play flag football in college with our intramurals program for all four years. Grabbing that flag from an opposing player was an experience you don’t forget.

Now fast forward, and my son will be playing flag football for the first time. I’m excited to watch him learn more about the game of football and teamwork with fellow teammates.

Many of our writers have had their children play this fun sport, and here’s a little bit more on how they enjoyed the experience.

“For the last two fall seasons, my son has played flag football for Bearden Youth Sports. This year my husband was a coach for his team. We went into this sport not knowing whether or not my son would like playing football or not, we just wanted to start trying different team sports to see if it would be a good fit. As it turns out, we ended up loving flag football. It was very cool to see the growth in my son’s skills from one year to the next and I feel like he learned a lot about the actual game his second go round. We also loved the camaraderie between the boys and the families. It was a lot of fun once everyone got to know each other, cheering for everyone’s kids when they made a good play or blocked someone or got a flag!“-Contributor Stephanie R.

“We have really fun memories of Flag Football when my youngest son was 5, 6 and 7 years of age. It was a new experience for our family, and the timing coincided with football season in general, which fueled the fun for our little guy who thought he was part of the regional teams (think: high school, and VOLS).  It was great exercise, working the big muscles with low contact. Learning at the young age gave him a good mental view of the game and I’m convinced it helped with strategy. Flag football was very inclusive and allowed participants with differing levels of ability to join into a common goal, running and reaching to develop motor skills.”Contributor Missy R.

Future for Football is also celebrating the 2023 College Football Hall of Fame Class which includes a very famous UT Vols Football player, Eric Berry. Eric Berry had a phenomenal career at the University of Tennessee, and even was a Heisman trophy nominee during his collegiate career. We all love Eric Berry, and the chant of “Eric Berry, Eric Berry” will always stay with us.

Over 20 years ago, I moved to Knoxville and fell in love with the city that has now truly become my home. Shortly after moving here, I married my college sweetheart, and when not working we set out to travel as much as we could. After working as a financial manager for six years, I welcomed my first son in 2010 and began a journey as a stay-at-home mom. Two years later we added another baby boy to make us a family of four. In June 2016, we welcomed our third son. I founded Knoxville Moms in November 2013 which began my career as a work-from-home mom, and it grew to the expansion of Chattanooga Moms in March 2016. We welcomed our first girl in November 2017 making us a family of six and adding a little pink in our house. In June 2021, I became the co-owner of the Atlanta Mom website, and in March 2022 I became the owner of the Nashville Moms parenting website. When I'm not carpooling the kids to sports and activities, you can find me enjoying a cup of coffee, reading a good book, and dreaming about my toes in the sand. I enjoy meeting new people and enjoy connecting the moms of Knoxville, Chattanooga, Atlanta, and Nashville.
