Flying Out Of TYS For Spring Break? Here’s What You Need to Know

Fly Knoxville TYS AirportAfter what felt like a never-ending January and a fast February, March is here, which means we’re ramping up for spring break!

If you’re traveling through McGhee Tyson Airport (TYS) to get to your spring break destination, you’re not alone! Last year, the airport served 2.8 MILLION passengers, which was a 14% increase over 2022. That growth could be attributed to more people discovering that East Tennessee is a great place to visit, but it’s also because airlines have added more aircraft and destinations available out of TYS!

Of the 25+ nonstop destinations, a few family favorites include Boston, Austin, Chicago, Denver, New York, and Orlando (via MCO & SFB)!

Fly Knoxville TYS AirportAll that being said, if you’re traveling for spring break, there’s a few things you need to know:

  1. Arrive to the airport TWO hours before your flight.
This will give you plenty of time to get to the terminal, check in at your ticket counter, get through the TSA Security Checkpoint, and find your gate.
  2. Due to construction projects and high demand for parking, airport parking is limited. Have someone drop you off at the airport, make a taxi reservation, take a Uber/Lyft, or check flyknoxville.com for real-time parking lot occupancy. To assist with limited parking availability, a new Economy Lot C has been opened. This lot is located near the Hunt Rd/Tyson Center intersection and requires a shuttle to and from the terminal building. Factor in an additional 15 minutes for this shuttle transportation.
  3. During peak travel times, there could be a long wait at the TSA Security Checkpoint. Check tsa.gov for a list of prohibited items and to make sure your luggage will fit through the new security screening machines. If you find that your bag will not fit through the checkpoint, do not abandon your luggage at the airport.
  4. If you are picking up someone from the airport, expect more traffic too. Utilize the free Phone & Wait lot instead of circling the property or waiting on the curb.
  5. And last but certainly not least: have fun, make memories, and enjoy your adventures!
