Halloween has always been my favorite holiday, hands down. There’s just something about this time of year that feels magical. The crisp air, the cozy sweaters, the smell of cinnamon candles, the glow of porch pumpkins – I’ve loved it all since I was a kid.
Growing up in South Florida, “fall” was more of a mindset than a season. The leaves didn’t change, the air didn’t cool, and you were more likely to sweat through your costume than need a sweater. Living in Knoxville, I finally get to experience a real fall, the kind of October that actually feels like October should.
So it’s no surprise that now, as a mom, I find myself recreating that same sense of excitement for my own kids, just in slightly different ways.
Every year, I tell myself I’m going to keep Halloween simple. One costume per kid. No excessive candy. No elaborate front porch décor. And then, inevitably, I find myself wandering the Target aisles, debating if my kids need the glow-in-the-dark pajamas and whether the dog would look cute in a skeleton sweater (she would).
Somewhere between the pumpkin-shaped marshmallows and the $5 spooky mugs, I realize I’ve done it again: I’ve fallen headfirst into Boo Basket season.
If you’re new to the tradition, Boo Baskets are little bundles of Halloween joy: small gifts, treats, or trinkets you surprise your kids, friends, or neighbors with. They’re not fancy or over-the-top (unless you want them to be). They’re just a nice way to say, “Hey, I see you-and I hope your October is full of fun.” And honestly? They’ve become one of my favorite little fall rituals.
What to Put in a Boo Basket
You can go as simple or as creative as you want; the magic is in the thought. Here are a few ideas to get you started:
For little kids:
- A Halloween book (bonus points if it glows in the dark)
- Pumpkin stickers or tattoos
- Glow sticks for trick-or-treat night
- Mini Play-Doh or slime
- A sweet treat or seasonal snack
For tweens/teens:
- Cozy Halloween socks or scrunchies
- A Crumbl or Starbucks gift card
- Mini skincare or lip balm
- Movie candy and a “Scary Movie Night” coupon
For grown-ups or neighbors:
- Fall-scented candles
- Pumpkin spice coffee pods or a mug
- Snack mix or caramel popcorn
- A little note that says, “You’ve been booed!”
You can grab a $1 bucket, fill it with tissue paper, and pull a few fun things from around the house; it doesn’t have to cost much. The goal isn’t perfection; it’s a smile.
Boo Baskets are more than just candy and cute socks. They’re a small reminder that joy doesn’t have to be complicated. Life moves fast, but seeing my kids’ faces light up over a little surprise makes me pause, smile, and soak in the season. Living in Knoxville makes it even better; the cooler mornings, colorful leaves, and relaxed fall pace make Octobers feel extra special.
