I’m a member of a Facebook group where people post celebrating the extraordinary things that they’ve found in secondhand shops. Sometimes they find designer clothing or accessories that have been marked down to bargain prices. Occasionally, they’ll come across original artwork by a famous artist who the store failed to recognize, or even antique items that are highly collectible and worth much more than the $3 orange sticker hastily affixed to the bottom. Being a member of this group feels like watching an internet version of Antiques Roadshow (with the people in the comment section taking the place of actual appraisers), and I am here for it. It’s also given me a serious hankering to go thrifting to see what treasures I can find!
While there is no shortage of “chain” thrift stores to choose from (there are 23 KARM locations and 25 Goodwill locations around Knoxville and its outlying neighbors), I’ve compiled a list — by no means comprehensive — of some of the lesser-known secondhand shops around town. I’ve decided to focus on stores selling secondhand clothing, furniture, and household goods, though the lines get blurry so there are a few antique stores thrown into the mix.
