Knoxville leaders gathered near World’s Fair Park on Monday, March 6th to cut the ribbon on a new playground structure at Fort Kid located where several community members made fond memories as children.
The playground now includes a new accessible play surface, a fort tower with a slide, poles for climbing and balancing, an accessible merry-go-round, a toddler play area, an accessible pathway and new site grading with soil enhancements.
The original Fort Kid structure was demolished in 2020 after reports of several hazards and safety concerns. The city then went to work to fund and design a new structure at the same location.
On September 6, 2022, City Council accepted a $44,456 contribution from Visit Knoxville to amend the contract with Great Southern Recreation for the purchase of new park benches, a decorative gated entrance, and new fencing at Fort Kid. Because of increased costs for building materials, these items were initially removed from the project scope until additional funding could be secured. The benches will be black powder coated and the decorative gate at the park entrance will match the colors of the centerpiece tower play structure.
Fort Kid is located across from the Knoxville Museum of Art.
