Growing Flowers To Cut And Arrange All Summer

One of my favorite hobbies is growing a cutting garden in my backyard. A few stems in a vase can make your home feel instantly refreshed and beautiful without much effort. It is easier to start than you might think. A small raised bed can give you plenty to enjoy all season.

Why Raised Beds?

Raised beds make gardening feel much more manageable, especially if you are just starting out. You can control the soil from the beginning, which is one of the biggest advantages and leads to healthier plants and better blooms. Starting with a good mix of compost and quality garden soil sets everything up for success. They are easier to maintain, require less weeding, and create a clean, defined space that does not feel overwhelming. A single raised bed can produce more flowers than you expect.

My Favorite Flowers to Grow

Dahlias: These are the focal flowers. They are full and beautiful, and the more you cut them, the more they bloom.

Zinnias: These are the easiest to grow. Start them from seed and they will bloom all summer with very little effort.

Cosmos: Cosmos add a soft, airy feel. They bring movement and keep arrangements from feeling too structured.

Dill: Dill is an unexpected favorite. It adds texture and gives arrangements a finished look.

How to Choose Colors

Start with two or three main colors. Soft neutrals like white and blush always work, or you can choose a palette like pink and peach. Add one deeper tone for contrast so arrangements do not feel flat, and repeat your colors throughout the bed so everything feels cohesive. When planting, think in layers. Dahlias create the focal point, zinnias bring color, and cosmos and dill add softness and movement.

How to Organize a Cut Flower Bed

Keep your layout straightforward with a few easy guidelines. Place dahlias toward the back of the bed, zinnias in the middle, and cosmos and dill along the front so everything is easy to see and cut. Once planted, cut flowers often to encourage more blooms. Water deeply a few times each week. Starting small and keeping it simple is what makes this sustainable and enjoyable.

A Few of My Favorite Resources

For seeds and supplies, I like Johnny’s Selected Seeds, White Flower Farm, and Farmgirl Flowers. For raised bed inspiration and guidance, I often look to Gardenary.

Growing flowers in a raised bed is a rewarding hobby and an easy way to have flowers on hand for your home or to share with friends. It also creates a space that draws in birds and butterflies, which adds to the enjoyment. A small bed can bring a lot of life to your yard and give you something to enjoy throughout the season.
