This past weekend, we decided to take a little staycation in one of our favorite places: Townsend, Tennessee. It was the perfect mix of adventure, festivals, fall flavors, and downtime by the mountains.
Why We Love Staycations
One of the best parts about a staycation is that it takes away the stress of long travel days, airport lines, or packing up the entire house. Instead, you can enjoy more time actually experiencing your trip. For us, staying close to home meant less money spent on gas or flights, fewer logistics to juggle, and more energy for family fun. Another perk? You see your own area with fresh eyes. It’s amazing how many festivals, trails, and hidden gems are just a short drive away when you start exploring like a tourist in your own backyard.
Day One: Dollywood Harvest Festival & Great Pumpkin Luminights
We kicked off our staycation with a trip to Dollywood, which is simply magical in the fall. The park comes alive during the Harvest Festival with seasonal treats, live music, and all things autumn. Our kids were enchanted by the glowing displays at Great Pumpkin Luminights, where thousands of hand-carved pumpkins light up the night. A highlight for us was the brand-new Candy Corn Forest, a whimsical walk-through filled with glowing candy corns that had us all smiling!
Day Two: Townsend Fall Festival
The next day, we headed to the Townsend Fall Festival, a celebration of Appalachian culture and community. We strolled through booths filled with local artisans’ crafts, sampled delicious festival food, and enjoyed live bluegrass music. Our kids especially loved the activities hosted by Charm Ministries, which gave them plenty of space to play and get creative. There’s something special about small-town festivals; the warmth, the creativity, and the feeling that fall has truly arrived.
Day Three: Dandridge Scots-Irish Festival
Saturday took us a little farther out to the Dandridge Scots-Irish Festival. Even though we got caught in the rain, it only added to the authenticity of the experience (a true taste of the Highlands!). We warmed ourselves with hearty foods like haggis, shepherd’s pie, and buttery scones filled with whipped cream and strawberries. The Tennessee Irish Dancers even put on a demonstration, and our little ones got to try their hand (or rather, their feet!) at some Irish steps – an unforgettable moment that had the whole crowd smiling.
Day Four: Relaxing at Little Arrow
After three days of nonstop fun, we spent our last day soaking in the peace and beauty of Little Arrow Outdoor Resort. The kids splashed happily in the heated zero-entry pool, while we simply relaxed and took in the mountain views. That evening, we capped things off with a delicious dinner at Peaceful Side Social, where the wood-fired sourdough pizza hit the spot after a weekend full of adventure.
Nature, Hiking & Birding Fun in Townsend
Of course, no trip to Townsend is complete without enjoying the great outdoors. There are so many hiking opportunities nearby, from family-friendly river trails to breathtaking mountain overlooks. This trip, one of our favorite activities was using the Merlin Bird ID app to identify the feathered friends around us. Our kids have become little birding enthusiasts, pointing out species everywhere we go, and Townsend was the perfect place to add to their growing list.
Final Thoughts
Our staycation reminded us why Townsend is such a special gem in the Smokies. Between Dollywood’s magic, local festivals, cozy mountain downtime, and the joy of discovering nature together as a family, we came home with full hearts and sweet fall memories.
