The wife of a first responder knows lots of sleepless nights
She knows phone calls mean trouble and silence is golden
But praying he will be alright.
***
The wife of a first responder keeps the doors locked tight
For standing in line at the grocery store and the comment, “hey, your husband put me in jail”
Makes you check them twice tonight.
***
The wife of a first responder makes supper with the hope
That he will arrive in time to enjoy it, instead of arresting someone with dope.
That he can sit down with his own family, and laugh and chat about the day
To see how pretty her picture was colored, to see how superheroes play.
***
But the wife of a first responder understands more than ever
That he would rather be around the table than catching one more criminal.
To see birthdays and holidays instead of call-outs and overtime,
To put the gun and badge down and just clear his mind.
***
She loves him so much she has to let him go
To do the work he does best, to protect the people so well.
Our family counts on him, but so do thousands of others,
So the wife of a first responder hugs him tightly as he walks out the door.
Praying he returns back to his home once more.
