Since the first Small Business Saturday in 2010, everyone has learned various reasons why shopping small and supporting local is important. But in 2020, the need for supporting local is greater than ever.

Due to the COVID pandemic and the resulting downturn in the economy, many small businesses have been pushed to the brink and have been forced to make decisions they never thought they would have to make. Meanwhile, the sales of large box stores and Amazon have soared. We can all agree that having a package delivered to our door in a mere matter of hours or a couple of days, and at a very low price is easy and convenient, but we do not always see the real social costs of our purchasing decisions.

When you choose to support local, you are choosing to shop from a place that has special and well curated collections that won’t be found online.

They can provide a personal shopping experience. You support the businesses and makers that are your friends, neighbors and community members. More dollars are reinvested into your community when you purchase locally too. Local shops and restaurants are donating to their local charities and schools. They keep real estate values high in your neighborhood by keeping your city unique.

Supporting local this holiday season makes a difference. Spending your hard-earned dollars locally means that your money stays in your community and benefits you and your family.

And as a small business owner, it means everything to see our community shopping local. We work hard all year to create a place to inspire and bring joy to our community. If you have any questions or need something special, I promise your local shops would love to help you! From gift wrapping, to finding the perfect gift and curbside service, your local shops, makers and restaurants are ready to serve you.

Be sure to share your favorite local shops on social media too! Who are you excited to shop local with this year?
