If you are looking for a last-minute summer trip or a fun weekend getaway that is both educational and magical, Roper Mountain Science Center in Greenville, South Carolina should be number one place on your list! The Center blends hands-on, discovery, and nighttime fun all in one. This is one trip my son still talks about.
Interactive Learning
The Environmental Science & Sustainability Building is an immersive multi-level watershed exhibit that brings the water cycle to life. Kids can explore how water moves through the environment while learning how everyday actions impact the world around them. It makes science feel more like play than learning.
Dinosaur Adventure Trail
If you have a dinosaur loving child, prepare for excitement. The outdoor Dinosaur Adventure Trail features life-size dinosaur models hidden throughout the wooded path, making it feel like you’re on a real prehistoric expedition. There’s even a treehouse where kids can spot dinosaurs from above.
Harrison Hall
This may be the biggest touch-and-feel exhibit we have ever visited. The Marine Lab lets kids touch horseshoe crabs and stingrays, while other exhibits encourage them to face fears by touching snakes or exploring the Amazon Rainforest. Interactive stations include everything from turtle shells to taxidermy displays, creating hours of entertainment for curious hands and minds.
Living History Farm
Step back into the early 1800s at the Living History Farm. Here you will find authentic log cabins, a barn, blacksmith shop, schoolhouse, gardens, and farm animals that recreate life in South Carolina’s Upstate. Kids can experience old-fashioned toys, try gem mining, learn about gardening, and even try milking a cow. It’s hands-on history in the best possible way.
Butterfly Garden
The Butterfly Garden is colorful and full of life. It contains a variety of plants that attract butterflies and pollinators, and was certified as a National Wildlife Federation Schoolyard Habitat in 2002. Children can observe butterflies, bees, and other wildlife while learning how important their habitats and impact on our environment are.
Hooper Planetarium
The Hooper Planetarium features the first American installation of the Spitz 4K IQ projection system, making incredibly immersive shows. Programs include astronomy, earth science, anatomy, history, and themed light shows that are entertaining for both kids and adults. They have daily events and light shows. There is even a Taylor Swift themed light show – I see you mom.
The Charles E. Daniel Observatory
The observatory houses a historic 23-inch refractor telescope, the eighth largest in the nation. Originally completed in 1882 for Princeton University, the telescope has incredible history. If your child is fascinated by stars, planets, or space, this stop alone is worth the trip.
We spent hours exploring and still felt like we could have stayed longer. Every area offered something different and the mix of indoor and outdoor exhibits made it easy to cool off in the summer heat.
