I am struggling to get excited about the start of the school year. Maybe it’s because I am a mom who loves summer and who loves having all her kids at home. Or, maybe it has to do with the fact that I am a teacher’s kid, so summer was always extra sacred growing up. Summer meant my mom was home and we would camp out at the pool every day until school started again.
This summer has felt extra special after completing our first year of school. It has been such a refreshing time of adventure, fun, and making memories. My youngest daughter has enjoyed having her big sisters at home and I have loved seeing them get to spend time together. I am not looking forward to returning to the car line, our schedules becoming more hectic, and leaving all the magic of summer behind. Plus, let’s not forget ALL THE GERMS.
To help with the end-of-summer blues, I am trying to focus on the positives of the back-to-school season. So, if you’re a mom like me who is lamenting the end of summer break and an empty house does not excite you, read on for some of the things I am trying to focus on to make it better:
There will be so many new things for my kids to get excited about.
A new school year means new teachers, new classrooms, and new friends. There are going to be new opportunities to learn new ideas and skills. My kids are going to encounter new people who can be a positive influence on them. All the newness can be scary, but it’s going to be so exciting to see how much my girls grow and mature this year.
Old routines are going to return.
While I don’t especially love the grind of homework, packing lunches, and picking out outfits, there is something comforting about being in a set routine. My girls like knowing what to expect each day and it’s easy to give them that predictability during the school year.
Back-to-school means fall is right around the corner.
Cooler temperatures will be here soon along with pumpkins, fall colors, and Halloween fun. Fall festivities will soon replace our summer adventures with trips to pumpkin patches and corn mazes. We will replace our tank tops with sweaters and our evenings at the pool will become cozy evenings at home.
And I can’t complete this list without mentioning that back-to-school season means…it’s almost football time in Tennessee again!
If we have to say goodbye to summer, at least we can look forward to the fact that soon we will be able to spend our Saturdays cheering on the Vols.
So cheer up mamas, we are going to get through this back-to-school transition. Summer break might be ending, but there is still so much to celebrate.
