A literary movement is sweeping the United States and East Tennessee! Little Free Libraries have already been spotted in Knoxville neighborhoods, downtown streets, city parks and beyond. If you don’t know what you’re looking for, Little Free Libraries are a little like birdhouses, but bigger and they’re filled with donated books. The concept is simple: take a book and share a book. It all began in 2009 when Todd Bol created a tribute to his mother, who was a former teacher and loved to read. Todd built a miniature schoolhouse, put it on a post in his Wisconsin front yard and filled it with free books. Neighbors and friends loved it, so Bol built several more and gave them away. Soon the non-profit Little Free Library was born.
Now, there are over 150,000 libraries in 120 countries. There are roughly 50 registered Little Free Libraries in our area. Knoxville Moms has put together this list to help you find the ones near you. Some people like to explore and check out Little Free Libraries in other places too.
