As Knox county schools have let out this week, and our Summer winds up, I wanted to take a minute to draw your attention to the unofficial beginning of Summer, Memorial Day. And I wanted to focus on the more than one million men and women who have died in service to our country. Being a Navy spouse, this day has great meaning to me. But I was also raised as a patriot, before ever meeting my husband. My maternal grandfather enlisted in the Navy during World War II. My grandmother tells stories sometimes, in bits and pieces, of how hard it was on him, and though I don’t know much about his service, I am proud of his selflessness.
My grandfather’s official Navy photo. Looking eerily like my younger brother!
Anyway, just a short few notes to encourage you to think of, thank, and remember our military this Memorial Day. And while you’re at it, just thank anyone in uniformed service (police, firefighters, EMTs, etc.). We all know how thankless the job can be, but they are the ones that step up, often at their own risk, and while missing out on time with their own family.
Some information: check out some interesting statistics here, including information on deaths by war, longest living survivors, etc. And here is a link to request military records, if you are a veteran or their next-of-kin. And lastly, one of my favorite pictures of MY servicemember (taken at my college graduation):
Thanks for sharing this Janie…and thanks to your husband and to the many others who have served!
My pleasure!!!
Love this! So so thankful for all the men and women that have fought to keep us safe, and all the husbands and wives waiting in the wings until they return!
Big thanks to your husband too Christie!
