How To Survive Pregnancy: The Realist’s Edition

How To Survive Pregnancy: The Realist's EditionThere are many lists about how to survive a newborn, top products for newborns, best products for a baby, but where are the posts on how to survive pregnancy?

You’re in luck because I am going to share the things which have helped me survive my second pregnancy so far and I hope they help you too!

The first trimester is the worst, from nausea to morning sickness. Who named it morning sickness? That was a lie because it’s all day, 24/7. Honestly, I couldn’t find much relief, but Preggie Pops helped. You can buy these in candy or sucker form and they can be found on Amazon, Walmart, Target, etc. Another supplement that helped my nausea was B6. I could only find this at a vitamin shop and Amazon, but please check with your doctor prior to taking any medication.

So far in my second trimester I am having the WORST dry mouth. It’s miserable. I still get nausea from the dry mouth. My sister who works in a dental office recommended Biotene. You better believe I bought both the mouthwash and moisturizing spray. The spray stays with me 24/7. With dry mouth always come dry lips, so invest in a good chapstick as well. I have chapstick on my work keys, car keys, and one in my car.

You better increase that water intake girl. If your husband is like mine, I am banned from buying any more cups, but use this as an excuse to buy a cute new one. With the increase urination comes dehydration, so buy the cup and stay hydrated.

I am controversial on pregnancy pillows. I don’t love mine because the head pillow isn’t tall enough for my liking. However, there are so many different types available. I will give you my friend’s advice to buy a pregnancy pillow. It helps support the belly and back at night.

You better buy a pregnancy bra stat. Those suckers grow and grow fast. Target’s brand Auden has been great for me. If you plan on breastfeeding, invest in breast feeding bras so you don’t have to buy more after delivery.

*Sighs* Maternity Clothes…I am bitter about this topic. Target has a small section in store as does Kohl’s. Old Navy, H&M, Pink Blush ($$$), Amazon and a few other stores have online sections. I don’t like buying maternity clothes online because I’m not exactly sure what size I am or what size I will be in six weeks.

This go around I have had to adjust my skin care routine. My face has been drier than the Sahara Desert. The best product that worked for me was Clinique Moisture Surge, but use what works for you. I also had to go back to putting foundation on with my fingers. The whole first trimester my blender and brush would not spread my makeup. My advice is to expect many different changes throughout pregnancy; for example, my first pregnancy is way different than this one.

Oh, the exhaustion. I am 100x more tired this pregnancy than my first. Come 5pm, I am ready for bed. I have to have some form of caffeine during the day. I tried going cold turkey and the migraines weren’t worth it. My doctor cleared me to have up to a certain amount everyday, so I choose to stay within those parameters. My caffeinated preferences are V8 with Energy as it allows me to get in an extra serving of veggies with natural energy and Crystal Light energy packets. This also helps my water intake while staying away from soft drinks. This is my personal preference and there is nothing wrong with a Coke, which I will still have one on occasion.

Another thing I have made sure to buy is lotion for the bump and prenatal vitamins. I cannot stand the smell of Palmer’s Cocoa Butter so I use an Aveeno lotion. Another good investment is a good prenatal vitamin. The best vitamin I have found for myself is Nature Made brand, but like moisturizer, everyone reacts differently so find the best vitamin for you.

Last, but not least, if you don’t plan on staying home with the baby, you’re actually late for getting on a daycare list. I have been amazed by how long the waitlists are. It’s actually scary. I am on two waitlists and pray I get into one.

Pregnancy is different for everyone and often different from one pregnancy to the next. I hope this list helps you survive the next nine months. Buckle up, it’s a unique ride.

Kailey Ryan
Hi, my name is Kailey. I am a Registered Nurse turned high school Health Science Teacher. I am a proud wife and mom of 1. My sweet Brady (any football fans?) was born in August 2018. I am a Knoxville native and absolutely love the area. Where else can you drive to a beach, major city, or mountains in less than 6 hours? I married my husband in May 2017, we have known each other since he was 16. I love all things true crime, Disney, crafts, and Mexican food . If we aren't at work you will find us traveling or planning our next trip. We have a passion for traveling and our goal is to visit all 50 states. I do also work as a travel agent. I absolutely love planning vacations for families. I have been a travel agent since 2016. At the end of the day all we have left are memories, I make sure each and every family creates lasting memories. I'm most certainly not an expert on being a mom, but I hope to add some experiences and outlooks being a "millennial mom".
