The hate around Taylor Swift recently has reached an all-time high, but why? She’s dated a lot of men? Her lyrics are devil worshiping? She’s a democrat? Why is her life put under a microscope? What has she done that is so different from other celebrities? As a true Swiftie, I felt like it was my duty to not accuse the masses of being wrong, but rather, do my homework to prove they are.
Here are all the reasons why Taylor Swift isn’t the devil. After all, as Taylor says, “Wise men once read fake news and they believed it.” – The Albatross
- I hear she’s dated a lot of men. Taylor Swift is 34-years-old and her rise to fame began at age 16. She has publicly dated 12 men. While that may seem like a lot, part of growing up is figuring out the type of person you want to spend the rest of your life with. Let’s take a look at other celebrities’ dating histories: Kim Kardashian has been married three times and is currently dating an NFL star; Marc Anthony is on his fourth marriage; Nicholas Cage’s wife is 31 years younger than him; Eddie Murphy has 10 children with five different women; and Nick Cannon is repopulating the world. None of these celebrities are mocked like Taylor Swift is.
- Her lyrics are devil worshiping. I’m sorry what?! This one I had to look up. It’s floating around TikTok and Facebook that Taylor performs devil rituals at her concerts and that her newest album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” is satanic. I went to her concert in Nashville and never once felt like I was attending a ritual of any sort. Another example I saw was a video of her wearing a devil’s mask in the Karma music video. Rumors say the song is either about Scooter Braun or Kanye. The lyrics associated with the scene are discussing good vs. evil and then the scene shows her wearing a devil’s mask. At one time, both of those men had the world fooled into thinking they were good guys who have since made poor decisions. While we are on the topic of songs and celebrities, let’s look at some artists who aren’t scrutinized for their choice of words or acts: Morgan Wallen is currently in the hot seat (or popularity?) for drunkenly throwing a chair off a building that could have literally killed someone. Girls are making t-shirts proudly wearing his mug shot. In the past, there have been various videos surfacing of him making out with multiple women at parties. He sings about drinking, partying, cheating and yet he’s praised. The Chicks (also known as the Dixie Chicks) have a song about literally killing a man and hiding the body. Miranda Lambert also has a song about killing someone. I dare not even talk about talk about Jason Aldean’s music video “Try That In A Small Town.” The double standard here is without question.
- She’s an alcoholic. Someone told me Taylor must be an alcoholic because she always has a drink in her hand when the media takes pictures of her at a bar or a sports game. It’s very common for adults to drink at those events. Taylor has never been arrested for a DUI or drunk and disorderly conduct, but there are the celebrities who have: Justin Bieber, Khloe Kardashian, Tim Allen (our childhood hero Woody from Toy Story), John Stamos (our beloved Uncle Jesse), Michael Phelps, Morgan Wallen, and Mel Gibson. Yet, Taylor is scrutinized for having a drink in her hand in a public setting.
- Her political and religious beliefs. I think a new unspoken rule should be that religious and political beliefs be kept private. It isn’t my job to judge you based on a religious or political preference. That’s the cool thing about your beliefs; they are yours and not mine. If you look up Taylor’s past interviews, she shares her religious beliefs if you’d like to know them.
- Her fans are in a cult. According to Merriam-Webster, a cult is “a great devotion to a person, idea, object, movement, or work (such as a film or book).” Now, let’s look up the definition of devotion: “The act of dedicating something to a cause, enterprise, or activity.” Now that you know the definition of a cult, there are a lot of things that fall under the definition of a cult: The military, a devotion to our country; the National Honor Society for high school students and nurses, both of which ask people to hold a candle and take an oath. There are a lot of people and things that can be considered a cult, yet no one shames them.
I want to point out Taylor’s generosity over the years.
She donated $70,000 in books to her hometown library in 2011. In 2015, she gave $50,000 in song proceeds to NYC schools. In 2016, she pledged $1 million to the Louisiana flood relief. In 2017, she donated to Joyful Heart Foundation for survivors of sexual assault. In 2018, she met a boy who had autism and bought him a service dog. In 2020, she donated $1 million to the Nashville tornado relief. During the Eras tour, she provided bonuses to her crew including dancers, riggers, sound technicians, catering, video, audio and lighting — everyone who played a part in taking the show across the country totaling around $55 million.
I understand people don’t like her music, but if you’re concerned about her lyrics, please make sure the music you listen to is screened for not only explicit lyrics, but meaning as well. If you don’t like Taylor’s political views, you might as well swear off Hollywood as a whole. If you think she’s satanic, please make sure you and your children don’t watch shows such as Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Harry Potter, My Little Pony, The Magic School Bus, Lucifer, and SpongeBob (I don’t know the theory behind this, but some lady stopped me in Walmart once because I was wearing a SpongeBob shirt and he’s somehow associated with the devil). Or, you could just move on quietly…we didn’t ask your opinion anyways.
