School is almost out! Before the last bell rings, I try to get a few craft ideas together to have on hand over summer when the weather is bad or we just need a break.
Here’s one of my most recent projects done with a second grade class: a lantern. It’s easy to make and gives great results every time.
For this activity you need the following:
Mod Podge
Foam brush or a brush to throw away
Tissue paper cut into squares (you can tear it or you can buy it pre-cut in big packs from Oriental Trading Company)
Plastic or glass Mason jar (again, I bought these from Oriental Trading Company)
LED tea light
How to make the lantern:
1. Apply Mod Podge to a section of the jar and place tissue paper over it.
2. Overlapping the tissue paper makes a pretty stained glass look when lit.
3. Make sure every piece of tissue paper is stuck down well; if not apply Mod Podge over it.
4. Let dry and put light in.
These easy lanterns are so fun to make! They are great for imaginative play and make a pretty nightlight. It’s also a great group project too. There are a lot of crafts you can make with any leftover tissue paper too, so hang onto your scraps. You can even use them for this project I previously did!
