Why See a Pediatric Dentist?

0

Setting up your child’s first dental appointment can be confusing. Parents often ask – does my child really need to see a pediatric dentist? Wouldn’t my family general dentist do just as well?

The truth is that children have specialized dental needs that are distinctly different from those of adults. Here are four reasons why a pediatric dentist could be a great fit for your little one:

Dentists with Specialized Training

One question we often hear at Children’s Dentistry of Knoxville is “What is a pediatric dentist?” Just as pediatricians specialize in your child’s medical needs, we specialize in dentistry for children. Pediatric dentists are the pediatricians of dentistry. Pediatric dentists complete an additional 2-3 year residency to receive specific training in treating children’s developing teeth. They know the unique problems that children face and they also understand the complexities of how teeth grow and develop. Lastly, pediatric practitioners have experience dealing with frightened children and can help your child feel at ease and comfortable at the dentist.

Smaller Child-Friendly Equipment

While there’s nothing wrong with using standard-sized dental equipment on children, it’s nice that pediatric dental offices use smaller equipment specifically designed for a child’s mouth. Additionally, we help ease your child into dental exams by introducing one piece of equipment at a time. This can help children get used to the complex and often “scary-looking” equipment without overwhelming them.

Child Centered Facility

At Children’s Dentistry of Knoxville our office has a jungle theme throughout (check out our big jungle tree!), so that it doesn’t feel like an adult dental office. There are toys and games in the waiting room, to help your child feel more at home and we have TVs above each dental chair for your child to enjoy during their exam and cleaning.

Education for a Lifetime of Good Dental Health

Pediatric dentists also focus on prevention of dental problems to ensure lifetime of good dental health. At Children’s Dentistry of Knoxville our doctors and staff focus on parent education and teaching your child about developing healthy habits to last a lifetime.

Over 20 years ago, I moved to Knoxville and fell in love with the city that has now truly become my home. Shortly after moving here, I married my college sweetheart, and when not working we set out to travel as much as we could. After working as a financial manager for six years, I welcomed my first son in 2010 and began a journey as a stay-at-home mom. Two years later we added another baby boy to make us a family of four. In June 2016, we welcomed our third son. I founded Knoxville Moms in November 2013 which began my career as a work-from-home mom, and it grew to the expansion of Chattanooga Moms in March 2016. We welcomed our first girl in November 2017 making us a family of six and adding a little pink in our house. In June 2021, I became the co-owner of the Atlanta Mom website, and in March 2022 I became the owner of the Nashville Moms parenting website. When I'm not carpooling the kids to sports and activities, you can find me enjoying a cup of coffee, reading a good book, and dreaming about my toes in the sand. I enjoy meeting new people and enjoy connecting the moms of Knoxville, Chattanooga, Atlanta, and Nashville.
