Dear Firstborn,
I can’t believe in a few weeks you will become a big sibling. I am beyond thrilled to give you a best friend for life. You have the absolute sweetest soul and heart, and already give your little sibling daily hugs and kisses. My heart bursts with joy to see your love for your growing family.
I remember the day you were born like it was yesterday.
They put your 8 pound 7 ounce little body on my chest — what an incredible moment. After a miscarriage and two years of infertility, God finally gave us you. You and I began our breastfeeding, baby wearing, and nonstop crying journey together.
Those first few months were incredibly difficult.
You and I had to find our new normal and learn how to survive life. I held you while you slept, snuggled you while you got “milkies,” and loved you so deeply. There were days when we cried together and days where we smiled, laughed, and discovered the world together.
You were and still are an incredible blessing to me.
I am beyond proud of the tiny toddler you have become. It has been an incredible 2.5 years seeing you grow. We can carry on full conversations now and you can share all of your big feelings with me. Everyday I am amazed by your knowledge, your ability to learn, and your teeny tiny voice singing, talking, and laughing all the time. I hope you can cherish our time together and always know how much I love you.
I know this will be a difficult transition for you.
I know at times you will feel sad.
I know at times you will want to send your sibling back.
I know at times you will not like your sibling.
I know at times you will want things to go back to how they were before your younger sibling arrived.
Please know your Daddy and I love you so much and you will never ever, ever be replaced.
We promise to love and cherish you just like we did before.
We promise to spend time with you one-on-one.
We promise to include you as much as we possibly can.
We promise to be your #1 fans.
We promise to try our very best to make you feel unconditionally loved.
You will always be my firstborn. You will always have my unconditional love. We will make it through this life-changing transition together and find our new normal. Our “us” time might look a little different, but know that I won’t ever forget the nights I laid awake staring at you, listening to you breathe, and thanking God you were right next to me. No matter what, you will always hold a special place in my heart that no one can replace, ever. Don’t you ever forget that, sweet tiny tot.
You have a scary, but exciting new role now.
That role is being:
A superhero.
A big sibling.
A protector.
A keeper of the secrets.
A fighter.
But, most importantly, always be our sweet little firstborn.
I sit here listening to you sleep soundly, wiping away the tears flowing down my face as I cherish these last few weeks together just “being us.” I love you fiercely tiny tot. I hope you know that, feel that, and never forget that.
Love you forever,
Mommy
