I know I am not the only mom to feel like summer in the Smokies is the best time of year! Endless days at the river, bonfires, hikes, Dollywood, splash pads, camps, sports, and all of the amazing festivals! I always find myself packing every sunny day, and every August, I somehow feel like time flew by and still feel unfulfilled. This winter, particularly the lovely winter storm that trapped us at home for a week, has taught our family the beauty of slowing down.
This summer, I am vowing to slow down. Here is how we plan to do so:
1. Schedule rest
We have decided to dedicate one weekend a month to rest and relaxation. I have learned in motherhood that unless I put it on my calendar, it isn’t happening! Rest for us looks like lounging in the backyard with a good book while the kiddos play or taking a day to enjoy the river or even having a cozy movie day! Rest is so important, especially in motherhood, so I plan to prioritize it this summer!
2. Prioritize activities/experiences that bring us joy
Saying ‘no’ to some things will be necessary if we are going to simplify our summer (something I have not been great at in the past!). I am learning to prioritize saying ‘yes’ only to activities that bring us joy. No more participating in everything that comes our way!
3. Still have date nights/MNOs
I know that all the organizations that put together MNOs (Moms’ Night Out) or offer Parents’ Night Out childcare seem to take a break in the summer, but that doesn’t mean we have to stop dedicating that time to nourishing our relationships. In an effort to slow down and prioritize self-care, I will be scheduling at least a couple of nights out with my mom friends. Schedules may be harder to coordinate during the busy summer months, but taking the time to slow down and have mom time and date nights is still important.
